The Norwegian text is historically set during the privateering era (1807–1814), when Denmark–Norway was at war with Great Britain. Along the Skagerrak coast, letters of marque were issued, granting Norwegians the right to seize prizes—that is, British ships. The rewards were great, but they risked their lives and freedom in this struggle, in which thousands were killed or ended up in British prisons. At home, the women waited, always gazing toward the beacon fires. Would they shine?
