The lyrics and melody originate from transcriptions from the 1400s and 1500s, but the last verse is a translation of a text written by Friedrich Layriz in 1844. According to a myth, a monk wrote this text after wandering through the forest on Christmas Eve and finding hellebore buds. When he returned to the monastery, he placed them in a vase on the altar, and during the night, they opened like roses.
